What makes WEN® different?

The concept of not using shampoo is something Chaz began to implement in 1993. He had been a hairstylist/colourist since 1985 and began to develop products for other hair companies in 1986. Seeing the results of clients using certain shampoos, he knew something had to change.

Due to the harsh detergents and sodium laurel/laureth sulfates found in many shampoos, he noticed clients were experiencing:

  • rapid colour fading/stripping
  • dull, lifeless, frizzy and dry hair
  • dry scalps

That was when he started to implement his new concept in cleansing, eliminating the detergents and sodium laurel sulfates that lather and strip your hair, and introduced the WEN® product line to the world.

Benefits to your hair using WEN®

  • Cleanses without lathering; it adds sheen, lustre, moisture and manageability to the hair.

  • Improved colour retention.

  • Enriched with the perfect balance of herbs and botanicals, not only cleansing your hair, but also moisturising and adding sheen.

  • WEN® is the only cleanser/conditioner you will need to use in your daily routine.

Rejuvenate your hair with sodium free shampoo

Because shampoos often contain both sodium chloride and sodium sulphates, many people have suffered their negative effects for years without even realising. They may think they simply have dry, brittle hair, and resort to increasingly expensive treatments to resolve this, when the problem actually lies in their choice of shampoo and conditioner. What they need is a sodium free shampoo.

Sodium lauryl sulphate and sodium laureth sulphate are detergents which are used in shampoo to create a luscious, thick lather effect. They are in fact the same harsh detergents that you will commonly find in stain remover, carpet cleaner, fabric glue and even in products designed to wash car oil from the floors of garages.

These products clean by corrosion and are highly damaging to the skin and hair. They dry skin by stripping the protective lipids from its surface, and even more worryingly, actually penetrate the skin where they mimic the human hormone oestrogen. This can cause a variety of problems from fertility issues to ovarian cysts and even breast cancer.

Why isn’t all shampoo sodium free?

Knowing all of this, you may be wondering why cosmetics companies choose to add such dangerous ingredients to their shampoos and conditioners. The simple answer is that sodium is inexpensive. Salt is the cheapest thickening agent around, while sulphates are the cheapest detergent.
Because cosmetics companies believe that consumers will be unimpressed by shampoo that is not artificially coloured, fragranced and chemically enhanced to create lather, they felt it was necessary to use highly damaging chemical ingredients. It is important to remember that none of these ingredients functionally enhance shampoo or conditioner in any way.

The alternative - sodium free shampoo from WEN®

WEN®products are 100% sodium free. They use no harsh chemical compounds which damage the skin or hair follicles, guaranteeing clean, shiny, healthy hair every time.

These products are probably very different from anything you may have used before, and you may initially be confused by the lack of lather. Just remember, your hair is still being thoroughly cleaned, and, when you do see that lather when shampooing with other shampoos, you can be pretty sure that it’s because of an unpleasant, unnecessary chemical addition.

Because hair is especially vulnerable after colouring, WEN® cleansing conditioner is also especially useful as a shampoo for coloured hair. Hair is likely to dry out and break at this time, so it is even more important to avoid sodium chloride and sulphates and select a sodium free shampoo.
